Eat one apple per day. It can help you prevent cancer.
Apples contain at least two types of compounds that inhibit cancer: flavonoids and phenolic acids. Together they can protect you from cell damage that can cause malignancies. They can also prevent the cancer cells that emerge from dividing. If you do not like apples, try to eat citrus fruits and berries.
According to a recent study, a serving of nuts daily (roughly a handful) can help prevent deaths from heart disease and cancer. “People who consumed a portion of nuts five times a week or more had an 11% reduction in deaths caused by cancer,” said Ying Bao, an epidemiologist in charge of the study.
Beans and lentils
Beans and lentils have a large amount of fiber, antioxidants, phytochemicals and folate, which protect the cells of the colon while stimulating the function of this organ. Soybeans, particularly, contain genistein, a powerful compound that is under scientific investigation because it can be used to treat prostate, lung and colorectal cancers.
Tea and coffee
The ingredients of tea and coffee can protect you from a variety of cancers. The antioxidants in coffee are specifically effective against endometrial cancer. And green tea seems to be very effective in preventing cancer of the prostate. But make sure you let it cool a few minutes before you take it: Very hot drinks can increase the risk of developing cancer in the esophagus.
Laboratory studies have found that curcumin – the main ingredient in the spice known as turmeric that gives it the yellowish color and distinctive curry flavor – can help protect healthy cells and slow the growth of malignant cells. There is evidence that curcumin can help prevent the development of brain tumors.
The abundant content of the antioxidant lycopene in tomatoes can help fight cancer, as it stops the reproduction of cancer cells and even destroys them, among other things. Although tomato is very nutritious in all its forms, the body can better assimilate lycopene from cooked products such as tomato sauce.
Garlic and onions
The compounds that give garlic and onions such a strong flavor can neutralize carcinogenic substances and accelerate the recovery of damaged DNA. Like many other foods that help fight cancer, garlic is more effective against cancer of the digestive tract, such as cancer in the esophagus and colon.
The calcium in dairy products can neutralize possible carcinogens, especially those found in processed meats. Not all studies agree that milk reduces the risk of cancer. But recent reports show that those who drink milk are less likely to be obese. There is also evidence that maintaining a healthy weight can prevent cancer.
Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables have a large amount of sulforaphane, a substance that helps fight cancer and is so powerful that it is under investigation as a possible medicine.
The green leafy vegetables
Green leafy vegetables -such as arugula, kale, spinach and romaine lettuce- have a great abundance of antioxidants known as carotenoids, which in laboratory tests have shown their ability to inhibit the development of a variety of cells cancerous, including cancer of the skin, lung, stomach and certain types of breast cancer. Spinach could even block carcinogenic substances from cooked meats.
The red grapes
The red grapes (and the red wine) are full of resveratrol, which inhibits the development of cancer cells and causes their self-destruction. According to recent findings, resveratrol maintains its effectiveness – and may even be more effective – after the body metabolizes it. Peanuts, cranberries and blue berries also contain this compound.
